Kara Nova
We took a moment with Kara Nova, Circus and Performing Artist, contortionist and producer of Super Nova Circus.
GVNC: At what point in your life did you realize your calling?
Nova: I’ve been performing since 2010, and in 2019 I followed the calling to produce, curating our first big circus show at the Nevada Theatre! The pandemic paused our dreams for a while, but we were thrilled to return in 2022, and are excited to debut our fourth show, RITUAL, this January!
GVNC: Tell us about your creative process.
Nova: As a producer, I aspire to curate and present rare, seasoned, inspirational talents that awaken something deep with the soul. There’s an energetic exchange between performers and audience, a spark, and I seek to amplify this spark from the stage. Sharing a bit of light through the beauty and wonder of circus and performance! This concept is why I chose to call this season’s show “RITUAL,” - an intentional gathering to open portals of inspiration, potential, and joy. To reawaken that spark.
GVNC: What inspires you?
Nova: I’ve always been inspired by true dedication. Those who hold dreams and never give up, despite life’s obstacles, the ups and downs. Those who keep even the smallest flames alive, when the world can be, at times, so dark. I have the utmost respect for the discipline and strength required in pursuing a vision and a dream, whatever that dream may be. To stand up and fight for what you believe in, and what you dream…
GVNC: What are you most proud of? Nova: On a personal level, my patience! The past few years have brought great challenges, but I choose to remain patient, and steadfast to the dreams. As a producer, I’m proud and honored to host such amazing performers and friends on stage! Bringing together community, and these event reunions, is a highlight of the year! GVNC:What do you love best about our creative community?
Nova: I’ve lived in many places, but Nevada City is my favorite. It’s difficult to put into words, but the fusion of conscious-living, respect and love for the beautiful land, celebration and support for uniqueness and local endeavors… It all feels like home. I feel seen, and supported, whenever I’m here. And I’m grateful.
GVNC: Name two Nevada County artists you admire and why.
Nova: Truth or Dare Productions, who hosted me in their burlesque show in 2018 because that experience introduced me to the thriving performance arts scene in Nevada County, and inspired me to bring the circus to town! And secondly, Vixi Vale, a fellow performer showgirl powerhouse, who has also produced many events, paving a brilliant path and leaving stardust in her wake! We’re honored to have Vixi hosting RITUAL this January!
